Build a Collection That Fits Your Style, Lifestyle, and Personality

Have you ever fallen in love with a pair of earrings only to discover they never leave your jewelry box?

Maybe they were too heavy. Maybe they didn't match your wardrobe. Or perhaps they were beautiful—but they just didn't feel like you.

I've learned that the earrings we wear most aren't necessarily the trendiest or the most elaborate. They're the ones that fit naturally into our lives and make us feel comfortable, confident, and uniquely ourselves.

At Raccoon Designs, I create jewelry inspired by nature because I believe the pieces we wear every day should feel as authentic as the landscapes that inspire them.

Here are eight ways to choose earrings you'll actually reach for again and again.

1. Think About Your Everyday Life First

Before choosing earrings, think about where you'll actually wear them.

Do you work in an office?

Spend weekends hiking?

Teach?

Garden?

Travel frequently?

If you're constantly moving, lightweight earrings may become your everyday favorite. If you enjoy dressing up, perhaps you want one pair that makes a statement without feeling overwhelming.

The best earrings fit your lifestyle—not just your jewelry collection.

2. Let Nature Guide Your Color Choices

One of my favorite design lessons came long before I ever made jewelry.

Years spent studying horticulture taught me that nature rarely creates colors that clash.

Instead, forests, gardens, rivers, and mountains are filled with palettes that naturally work together.

If you're unsure what colors to choose, look to the outdoors.

You might discover that you're naturally drawn to:

  • Mossy greens

  • Labradorite blues

  • Earthy browns

  • Warm copper

  • Soft lavender

  • Weathered silver

  • Forest charcoal

Choosing colors inspired by nature often means they'll coordinate effortlessly with your wardrobe.

3. Don't Ignore Weight

Beautiful earrings shouldn't hurt your ears.

Many people own gorgeous earrings they rarely wear simply because they're uncomfortable after an hour or two.

When shopping, pay attention to:

  • Overall size

  • Materials used

  • Length

  • Balance

Sometimes a delicate pair you'll wear every week is far more valuable than a dramatic pair you'll only wear once a year.

Comfort matters.

4. Consider Your Hair and Neckline

Hair length can completely change how earrings look.

Long earrings often stand out beautifully with short hair or loose updos.

Studs and smaller drops can peek through longer hairstyles without competing.

Likewise, think about your favorite clothing.

High necklines often pair beautifully with statement earrings.

Lower necklines allow longer earrings to become part of the overall silhouette.

Jewelry should complement your style—not compete with it.

5. Choose Pieces That Tell Your Story

One of the reasons I love creating nature-inspired jewelry is because every piece reminds someone of something meaningful.

A dragonfly might recall summers at the lake.

Leaves can represent growth.

Birds often symbolize hope.

Trees remind us of strength and resilience.

Flowers celebrate beauty and renewal.

When jewelry carries personal meaning, it naturally becomes something you'll wear more often.

6. Build Around a Signature Style

You don't need dozens of different styles.

Many people find themselves reaching for earrings that share similar qualities.

Perhaps you love:

  • Botanical designs

  • Gemstone drops

  • Rustic metals

  • Woodland themes

  • Bohemian styles

  • Minimalist elegance

Once you recognize your signature style, shopping becomes much easier.

Instead of following every trend, you're building a collection that feels cohesive and unmistakably yours.

7. Invest in Versatile Pieces

The earrings I wear most are the ones that transition effortlessly.

A pair that works with jeans and a sweater should also look beautiful with a dress for dinner.

Nature-inspired jewelry has a wonderful way of feeling relaxed enough for everyday wear while still adding something special for more formal occasions.

Versatility often means you'll enjoy your jewelry for years rather than seasons.

8. Buy What Makes You Smile

This might be the most important tip of all.

Forget trends for a moment.

Forget what everyone else is wearing.

When you see a pair of earrings that instantly makes you smile…

that's usually the right choice.

Jewelry is personal.

It should reflect who you are—not who fashion says you should be.

If a pair reminds you of your favorite forest trail, a wildflower meadow, a peaceful garden, or a treasured memory outdoors, chances are you'll find yourself wearing it again and again.

Why I Design Nature-Inspired Earrings

Every pair of earrings I create begins with inspiration from the natural world.

Sometimes it's the iridescent flash of labradorite that reminds me of sunlight dancing across water.

Sometimes it's the graceful curve of a fern unfurling in spring.

Other times it's the quiet beauty of dried seed pods, woodland leaves, or the colors of autumn.

My background in horticulture taught me to slow down and truly observe the incredible details found in nature. That appreciation continues to shape every design I create.

I don't simply want to make beautiful earrings.

I want to create pieces that help people carry a little piece of nature with them wherever they go.

Final Thoughts

The best earrings aren't necessarily the most expensive, the largest, or the trendiest.

They're the ones that feel comfortable, reflect your personality, and become part of your everyday story.

Whether you're drawn to shimmering gemstones, botanical details, earthy metals, or woodland-inspired designs, choose jewelry that feels authentic to you.

After all, the pieces we wear most are often the ones that remind us who we are—and what we love.
